Week 1 Football Roundup Pt. 2

Springbrook (pictured above) pulled off a big win yesterday against major rival Blake, winning 30-22. In Coach Jason Lomax's first game as head coach, the Blue Devils did not commit a turnover, and had 331 total yards of offense. Springbrook relied on running back Shawn Cazeau to lead them to victory. Cazeau had a monster day, running for three touchdowns and 228 yards on 27 carries. Wide receiver John Grant also had a big day for Springbrook, making two catches for 48 yards and one touchdown. The defense was led by defensive end Isaac Ukwu, who had seven tackles, including four sacks. Linebacker Jean Desir led the team with eight total tackles.

Wilde Lake had an impressive first game yesterday, defeating traditional Howard County powerhouse River Hill by a final score of 33-13. The Wildecats put on a superb defensive display, forcing three fumbles and two interceptions for a total of five turnovers. The defense also scored twice- first on a Tyler Martin 52 yard interception return and then later on a Darius Nichols 65 yard fumble recovery. Rounding out the performance, Wilde Lake blocked two kicks and had an impressive eight sacks. On offense, Quez Bradley ran for 127 yards on 15 carries. He also had three touchdowns, as well as a two point conversion.

It took two days, but Linganore got their first win of 2015. The Lancers defeated Tuscarora 22-13 behind an excellent performance by running back Dante Butler. Butler ran for 262 yards on 28 carries, which averages out to 9.4 yards a carry. His longest run was for 52 yards, and he also had two touchdowns. Quarterback Nathaniel Musselman was 7 for 14 and threw for 87 yards. He threw for one touchdown, which was to wide receiver Jack Staub. Staub led all receivers with five catches for 57 yards.

Sparrows Point won a wild contest against New Town in Baltimore County play. New Town led 20-6 at halftime, and after a quick score in the third quarter, the Titans led 26-6. The Pointers scored to make it 26-14 heading into the 4th quarter. With four minutes left in the game, Sparrows Point scored again, making it 26-20. After the Titans recovered an onside kick attempt, they began to drive down the field. With under a minute left, Sparrows Point defensive end Matt Wallace intercepted an attempted screen pass and returned it 65 yards to give Sparrows Point a 28-26 lead with 33 seconds left. New Town would not quit though, and with .2 seconds left in the game had worked the ball to Sparrows Point's 1-yard line. The Titans attempted to run the ball up the middle, but was stopped by the Sparrows Point defense, giving the Pointers the victory.

Wise celebrated their new turf field in style, winning 19-6 over 2014 MPSSAA 2A state champion Douglass in Prince George's County play. The Pumas got a big performance from their quarterback Jabari Lewis. Lewis was 7 for 14 throwing the ball, gaining 105 yards and completing two touchdowns. He was also part of a balanced rushing attack the Pumas employed, gaining 67 yards on 13 attempts. Donnell Lowery also ran for 67 yards on 13 attempts and scored a touchdown. CJ Rainey had 16 carries and 64 yards. Damon Hayes and Idahota Akojie both had receiving touchdowns, while Myles Wolfork contributed three catches and 39 yards. Hayes and Wolfork both had interceptions for the defense, which was led in tackles by John Daka who had six.
