Walkersville Claims MPSSAA 2A Football State Championship

Walkersville High School from Frederick County scored the final 33 points to pull away from Cecil County's Elkton High School in a game that was tied at halftime to win the MPSSAA 2A state championship by a final score of 33-6.

Walkersville was led by Chad Gleason, who ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. He was joined in scoring by Jacob Wetzel, who ran for 63 yards on 8 carries. Wetzel caught a 12 yard touchdown pass from Billy Gant in the third quarter, the Lions only completion of the ballgame. Gant also found the endzone on a one yard sneak in the fourth quarter.

It was a total team effort on defense for the Lions on defense as Tyler Gleason led the way with nine tackles, including two for a loss. Canden Krenzer and Joe Goline both had seven total tackles, as well as a sack.

Elkton had the brighter start of the two sides. After holding the Lions offense to a three and out, Ray Estep ripped off a 38 yard touchdown run to give the Elks an early 6-0 lead. Estep wasn't done though, intercepting a Gant pass on the next possession to give Elkton the ball back. The team struggled to make plays after its first possession though, as Walkersville worked itself into the game.

In 2015, Walkersville lost in the 2A state title game to Patuxent, 21-20. This is Walkersville's second state championship in football. The Lions' first state title came back in 1987.
