Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr High School Wins MPSSAA 4A State Title

Henry A. Wise High School from Prince George's County won its second straight MPSSAA 4A state championship by topping Quince Orchard of Montgomery County 42-7. For the second straight season, Wise finishes 14-0.

The Pumas' defense was the key early on, forcing and recovering three fumbles in the first half. Wise also kept Quince Orchard out of the end zone over the first two quarters, only allowing 109 yards of total offense during that span. In total, the defense allowed 247 yards of offense. Calvin Hickerson II led the way for Wise with 13 tackles, while Willie Mabry had 12 tackles.

The Pumas also excelled on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Jabari Laws threw for three touchdowns to three different receivers, and threw for 276 yards. Running back John "Moo-Moo" Oliver ended the day with 106 yards rushing on 10 carries and 2 touchdowns. His touchdown rushes came on runs of 30 and 4 yards. AJ Lytton hauled in 4 passes for 113 yards, with a 72 yard touchdown in the third quarter being the highlight. The other touchdown passes were caught by Kyree Jackson on a nine yard completion, and Demetri Morsell on a six yard pass. Isaiah Hazal led all receivers with five catches, which was for 47 yards.

Much of Quince Orchard's offense was funneled through running back Marvin Beander, who gained 105 yards on 19 carries. Brendan McGonagle also hauled in a long 54 yard pass from Kendall Bonner that led to a touchdown reception for Kieron Jones, also thrown by Bonner. On defense, Quince Orchard was led by Fofie Bazzie, who had 10 total tackles.
