Five Football Games to Watch: Week 6
Milford Mill at Franklin
Milford Mill puts its undefeated mark on the line when it travels to Franklin, the Baltimore County team which most recently won a state title, this weekend.
The Millers have beaten a plethora of difficult teams en route to their 5-0 mark, including Dundalk and Parkville. The win over Dundalk in Week 2 was particularly special because beating the 2015 MPSSAA state finalist gave head coach Reggie White his 100th career victory. The team's defense has been dominant of late, holding opponents to a combined 13 points over the past two games.
Franklin opened its season with a loss to MIAA powerhouse McDonogh School, but has reeled off three straight wins to work itself back into the 3A North playoff picture. Since that loss to McDonogh, Franklin has outscored its opponents 131-7, and recorded two shutouts. The Indians have enjoyed tremendous success against Milford Mill in recent years, holding a 5-0 record against the Millers dating back to 2013, including a 40-0 win in the teams' lone meeting last season.
Milford Mill travels to Franklin this Friday at 7:00 PM.
Wise at DuVal
DuVal will look to hand Wise it's first loss of the season when the Tigers host the defending 4A state champions this weekend.
The Tigers started their season with two close contests, losing 7-0 to CH Flowers in Week 1 before getting an overtime 12-6 victory over Northwestern in Week 2. Since then, DuVal has been in excellent form, winning three straight by a combined score of 121-21. The Tigers recorded a shutout in a 43-0 win over High Point last weekend.
Wise is on a 19 game win streak that dates back to 2015, when the Pumas went undefeated en route to the school's second football state title. The team hasn't been seriously tested this year, recording three shutouts and the offense scoring at least 35 points in every game. Wise beat DuVal 42-7 in last year's contest, but DuVal was the last team to beat the Pumas, recording a 20-14 win in the 2014 playoffs.
DuVal hosts Wise this Saturday at 2:00 PM.
Northeast at Chesapeake
The Dena Bowl features two Anne Arundel County squads looking to have a much better second half than first half of the season. Both teams won their opening week, the proceeded to drop four straight.
For Chesapeake, the team had a dream season in 2015, finishing 7-3 and earning the first playoff berth in school history. The Cougars have struggled to maintain that success this season although its schedule has done it no favors. Every team Chesapeake has played currently holds a winning record, except for Lansdowne, the team the Cougars beat 16-12.
On Northeast's end, the Eagles want to pick up its first win against Chesapeake since 2010. Chesapeake has had a hold strong hold on the series since 2013, outscoring the Eagles 92-13. In order for the Eagles to turn it around, the defense will need to rediscover its form from the first week of the season when the team shut out Crossland 13-0.
Pasadena's premier rivalry takes place at Chesapeake this Friday at 6:30 PM.
Edmondson-Westside at Dunbar
These traditional Baltimore City powerhouses head into this contest standing at 3-2, but also on three game win streaks.
Of the two teams, Dunbar is the one in need of the win more. The Poets are a member of the highly competitive 2A North region. The region is shaping up to be one where teams with more than two losses run the risk of missing the postseason. Over this three game win streak, Dunbar's defense has been impeccable, allowing a mere 15 points and recording a shutout against Patterson in Week 3.
Despite its slow start, Edmondson-Westside is benefiting from few teams having fast starts in the 1A South region. The Red Storm and unbeaten Reginald F. Lewis are the only teams in the region with less than three losses. The past two weeks the team's offense has really kicked into gear, putting up a combined 68 points against Patterson and Poly. Edmondson-Westside is looking to avenge last season's game against Dunbar, which the Red Storm lost 44-12.
Dunbar hosts Edmondson-Westside this Friday at 6:00 PM.
Oakdale at Linganore
Oakdale looks to remain unbeaten when it travels to 3-2 Linganore this weekend.
The Bears are yet to be tested in 2016, easily rolling through their first five games. The closest game for Oakdale thus far came against Westminster, which the Bears ended up winning 42-13. A win this weekend for Oakdale would snap a five game losing streak against the Bears' Frederick County rival, including a 21-20 defeat in 2015.
Linganore is heading into this game after its toughest loss of this season- a 27-0 defeat at the hands of Walkersville. The Lancers had been playing well up to that point, reeling off three straight wins, including victories over two teams with winning records in Middletown and South Hagerstown. Linganore will want a win this week to keep up in the highly competitive 3A West region playoff picture, which currently features three undefeated teams.
