MPSSAA Football Regional Championships Roundup

16 different MPSSAA football regional championships were played this past weekend! Here are a few games that stood out this weekend.

1A South

FAET used six turnovers to beat Edmondson 18-14 to claim the 1A South Championship. It is the first regional championship for the Grizzlies, who have only had a varsity football program for three years.

FAET's defense was led by Tavon Joseph who recorded eight tackles, four of which were for losses. Joseph also forced a fumble in Edmondson's end zone which was recovered by Marquese Jacks. Jacks had five tackles, and one other fumble recovery to go with the touchdown he scored.

Two other players who were immense for FAET are Marquise Chamberlain and Kija Jackson. Chamberlain had nine tackles and a forced fumble, while Jackson had three interceptions. Chris Gross was also excellent, chipping in five tackles, including a sack.

The offense's top player was running back Ben Witherspoon. Witherspoon ran the ball 14 times for 77 yards, and scored a touchdown.

Quarterback Quantez Snow put together a strong game, throwing for 70 yards. He was also effective with his legs, rushing for 28 yards and scoring a touchdown. Snow's favorite target was Debrin Winchester, who made three grabs for 40 yards.

FAET will play Havre de Grace in a 1A semifinal game at 1 PM next Saturday at Baltimore Polytechnic.

2A West

Walkersville edged out South Carroll in the 2A West Championship to reach the semifinal round, winning 17-14. The Lions have won both of their playoff games on the road.

Walkersville's top performer was Jacob Wetzel, who excelled for the team on both offense and defense. On offense, Wetzel had six carries for 86 yards and a touchdown. He also made three catches for 68 yards. Wetzel picked up eight tackles on defense.

Much of the offense went through Chad Gleason, who carried the ball 22 times for 89 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Christian Policelli led the way with nine tackles.

The team also got a big play from its kicker Noah Sadler, when he converted on a 34 yard field goal attempt.

Walkersville is the only Frederick County School still in the MPSSAA football playoffs. They will be on the road for the third time in the playoffs this Friday when they travel to North Caroline to play a 2A semifinal.

4A South

Wise remained undefeated in 2015 by beating Eleanor Roosevelt 33-14 in the 4A South Championship.

The Pumas employed a balanced offense. On the ground running back CJ Rainey had 16 carries for 110 yards. He also scored two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jabari Laws completed nine passes for 157 yards. Laws threw two touchdowns, one of which was a 45 yard completion to Michael Clark. His main target was Myles Wolfork, who made 4 catches for 43 yards, including a touchdown.

Wolfork also stepped on defense, recording two tackles and an interception. Kashief Hyatt also had an interception, and finished the game with four tackles. Donnell Lowery led the team with 12 tackles, while Maverick Gamble II had eight tackles, including three for a loss.

Wise will host Northwest next Friday at 7 PM in a 4A semifinal contest.

4A West

Northwest won their third straight 4A West Championship by beating top ranked Quince Orchard in a shootout, 50-40. The Jaguars were the underdogs in this game despite being the 4A champs for the past two years because they had lost to Quince Orchard 28-7 earlier in the season.

Northwest scored seven touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Mark Pierce threw two touchdowns and ran one in from seven yards out to open up the scoring in the first quarter. In the second quarter, he connected with Ibrahim Konate on a 70 yard touchdown strike. He threw his other touchdown in the fourth quarter to Alphonso Foray, which was a 34 yard completion.

Khalil Owens ran for 57 yards on six carries, including three touchdowns. He had a pair of seven yard touchdown runs to help the Jaguars pull away from Quince Orchard. Owens also had three catches for 17 yards.

Juwon Farri had an excellent game, rushing the ball 19 times for 136 yards.

Northwest will travel to Wise next Friday at 7 PM in a 4A semifinal contest.
