Carroll County Grad Helping Build Pole Vault in Maryland Track and Field

When it comes to track and field events in the state of Maryland, the pole vault is not very prominent. Due to safety concerns, many counties and leagues restrict its practice and availability in competition, or require practices to be held by specially-certified coaches.

Moreover, it requires a specific set of implements that many schools cannot afford or do not have room to permanently house, making regular practice nearly impossible.

One Carroll County graduate, however, it aiming to change that.

Jacob Sanders (Winters Mill High School Class of 2011) created his own summer club, Sandstorm Vault, that focuses specifically on helping pole vaulters get regular practice and hone their skills. His club meets at Francis Scott Key High School in Carroll County, Dulaney High School in Baltimore County, and at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

Among those who attend his sessions are Westminster's Joey Petrowicz, this spring's 3A West regional champion in the event, Mount Hebron's Ethan Bishop, the 3A East champion, and Maryvale Prep's Tara Coyne, who finished second at the IAAM Championships.
