MPSSAA Football State Championships Pushed Back a Week

The four MPSSAA football state championship games, originally slated to take place from Dec. 1-3 at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, have been pushed back a week due to a conflict with Navy's football schedule.

The Midshipmen originally did not have a home game scheduled for this upcoming weekend, but after a terrific 2016 campaign in which the team finished 9-2 overall with a 7-1 conference record, Navy has earned the right to host the American Athletic Conference championship game this Saturday at noon. Navy did not clinch the home field advantage in the championship game until this past weekend's results, which included a 75-31 win for the Midshipmen. The team will be playing against Temple, which is 9-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

Navy's success on the football field means the MPSSAA games will now get kicked off on Dec. 8 at 7 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium when Damascus faces Franklin in the 3A championship. This game features the two most recent 3A championship winners- Franlin won the title in 2014, beating Damascus in the championship, while Damascus won it in 2015.

The 4A title game between Wise and Quince Orchard is now Dec. 9 at 7:30 PM. Both participants are hoping to win its third state championship. Wise is going for its second state title in a row, while Quince Orchard is aiming to win for the first time since 2007. This is also a rematch of 2012 4A state championship, which Wise won 12-7.

The 1A championship, which will be contested by Fort Hill and Havre de Grace, will take place Dec. 10 at 3:30 PM. Fort Hill is going for its fourth straight state title, while Havre de Grace is hoping to capture its first state title since 1986. This is a rematch of last year's 1A state title game, which Fort Hill won 44-14.

The 2A championship is the second game of a doubleheader scheduled for Dec. 10. It is set to start at 7 PM. In that contest, Walkersville, which lost in the 2A state title game last year, is aiming to win its first state championship since 1987 while Elkton is seeking its first state championship since 2000.
