Regional Semifinal Friday Football Roundup
The MPSSAA playoffs got underway tonight, with 27 games occurring all over Maryland! The WICKipedia highlighted a few different games, read all about them below!
South Carroll 21 - Marriotts Ridge 0
South Carroll progressed to the 2A West regional final by shutting out Marriotts Ridge, 21-0. The Cavaliers are now 10-1, and riding an eight game winning streak.
As a team, South Carroll ran the ball for more than 200 yards. Running back Steve Baca carried the bulk of the load, rushing the ball 21 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. Jamar Williams had 27 yards on six attempts and a touchdown, while Joe Mogbari had eight carries for 24 yards.
Quarterback AJ Linn completed seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Linn also ran the ball six times for 31 yards. His favorite target was Pat Kelly, who caught the ball three times for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Since Walkersville beat top seed in the region Oakland Mills, South Carroll will get to host the regional final next week. If they beat Walkersville next week, the Cavaliers will have won the 2A West title two years in a row.
Wheaton 12 - Watkins Mill 7
Wheaton's first playoff journey in 20 years started with a win, as the Knights beat Watkins Mill 12-7 in 3A South action.
The Knights got a big day from running back Dominyck Sims, who carried the ball 31 times for 160 yards and a touchdown. David Adeleke and quarterback Victor Barkley also made an impact in the rushing game. Adeleke finished with 33 yards on 17 carries while Barkley ran for 17 yards on five carries.
Barkley completed five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. His main threat was Blake Williams, who caught three passes for 43 yards. Williams also caught Barkley's lone touchdown pass. Adeleke had one catch but it was a big one for 36 yards. Perry Ellis also had a catch for 11 yards.
Wheaton will face the winner of tomorrow's contest between Magruder and Potomac in the 3A South championship game next week.
Patterson 8 - Hereford 0
Patterson did just enough to beat Hereford and advance to the 2A North regional final. The Clippers shut out Hereford, winning 8-0.
The defense was led by Gregory Booker's monstrous performance. Booker was everywhere for the Clippers, finishing the game with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery. Kennard Pugh also had a strong game on defense, registering eight tackles.
Hereford had no answer for Raekwon Wright, who rushed for 205 yards and the game's lone touchdown on 16 carries. That averages out to almost 13 yards a carry. Wright also helped the defense, coming up with three tackles and a fumble recovery.
Patterson will face Dunbar in a Baltimore City showdown for the 2A North championship. Patterson beat Dunbar 16-14 earlier this season.
Old Mill 36 - Annapolis 8
Pete Boone's big day led Old Mill to victory in their 4A East showdown with Annapolis. Boone rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots ran away with the game, winning 36-8.
Boone, whose longest rush was for 35 yards, carried the ball 30 times. In addition to Boone, quarterback David Marrocco had a strong day carrying the ball, gaining 37 yards and scoring on an 11 yard rush. As a team, Old Mill ran for 229 yards.
Marrocco completed nine passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. His main target was Camari Wilkerson, who finished the game with six catches, 42 yards and a touchdown. Wilkerson, who has been a big play threat for Old Mill all season, also picked off a pass on defense.
Rashay Moore had a big play on defense when he intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.
Old Mill will host Anne Arundel County rival Broadneck next week in the 4A East regional final.
Elkton 16 - Kent Island 0
Elkton traveled to Kent Island and won 16-0 to reach the 2A East regional championship game. The Elks are now 10-1 in 2015, with their one loss coming at the hands of Kent Island in Week 2.
Running back Raiquon Estep was the star of the show for Elkton. Estep ran for 265 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns. He scored his first touchdown on a 67 yard run in the second quarter. Later in the third quarter, Estep got his second touchdown of the game on a 51 yard scamper.
The Elkton defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season. The have now shut out four of their past five opponents.
Elkton will travel to the Eastern Shore next week to compete with undefeated North Caroline for the 2A East championship.
