Tenacious Watkins Mill Field Hockey Expecting More Success in 2015
The Watkins Mill field hockey team has big hopes for the 2015 season. 2014 was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Wolverines after seeing 13 seniors graduate from the previous season.
What ended up happening instead was their young team was more prepared for the varsity level than expected, reaching the 3A West regional final of the MPSSAA state tournament. The Wolverines ended up losing that game to Linganore.
"The girls poured their heart and soul into the game," head coach Melissa Brigham said. "We were not expected to put up any contest in that game, but ended up only being down one at halftime, eventually losing 5-0."
The Wolverines are hoping to match last year's run in the MPSSAA playoffs this season. Watkins Mill is also hoping to capture their second division title in three years. In order for that to happen, the Wolverines are going to need a core of key players to have strong, consistent seasons, including Madeline Rodriguez-White, Lily Schlosser, Emma Riley, Katherine Campbell and Virginia Schlosser.
"We're hoping to consistently play to our team's potential every game, and have a winning record that reflects our talent," said Brigham. "This season people can expect Watkins Mill to be competitive. We will have strong veterans and leaders on the team to propel us to a successful season."
The Wolverines have a difficult road to navigate to reach their goals because of their schedule. Watkins Mill plays Rockville, Damascus and Clarksburg, who are all expected to be difficult teams to beat this season.
Despite the difficult schedule, Brigham remains confident on her team's chances of winning in 2015.
"We only lost two seniors last year, so our team is full of strong returners," said Brigham. "One of our biggest strengths as a team is our positive team culture. The teamwork and camaraderie among the team is truly our solid foundation to be tenacious and competitive every game."
