MPSSAA Softball State Finals Day 2
CLASS 3A
Powered by a six-run fifth inning, Westminster High School won the MPSSAA Class 3A state championship with a 10-5 victory over Huntingtown High School.
The Owls (16-5) sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth, scoring their runs with the help of two singles in the inning by sophomore catcher Olivia Herman (the second of which drove in two runs), and singles from Sarah Sexton and Meghan Lockwood. Westminster was helped by three walks -- including two in a row with the bases loaded -- and an error.
Huntingtown (21-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a walk to Callie Hilgenberg, a hit-by-pitch to Kailey Cannon and a two-RBI single into right field by freshman pitcher Tori Fletcher.
The Owls got one back in the top of the second when Lockwood's single scored Sexton, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
The Hurricanes scored two more in the bottom of the inning. Kathleen Thompson singled, and then scored on Julia Keffler's double. Keffler scored later in the inning on an Emily Maseth wild pitch.
Westminster pulled off a triple play in the fourth. With runners on first and second, Julia Leffler attempted to bunt, but got the ball a little too hard and high. Maseth caught the ball for the first out and threw to first for the second out. The ball was returned to the pitcher, but the runner on second was still at third, so Maseth threw to second for the third out of the inning.
CLASS 1A
Perryville High School completed its undefeated season Saturday by defeating Boonsboro High, 10-9, in nine innings to win the MPSSAA Class 1A softball championship.
The Panthers of Cecil County finished their season 22-0. Boonsboro, of Washington County, finished its season 19-6
Jordyn Reese drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth with a double to left-center field, moved to third on Amber Keene's ground out to second and scored the game-winner on Ashley Meekins' sacrifice fly.
Boonsboro scored three times in the top of the seventh to tie the game 7-7. Freshman Rebekah Singleton drove in two runs with a single, and a batter later, sophomore Payton Smith tied it up with another single.
In the top half of the first ITB inning, Boonsboro scored on Alayna Pettyjohn's RBI single to take an 8-7 lead. But in the bottom, Perryville pushed a run across on Mara Little's RBI single.
The game started off with fireworks. Boonsboro tagged Perryville pitcher Emily Phillips for three runs in the top of the first. The big blow was a two-run double off the bat of catcher Christina Baker. Two batters later, Singleton brought Baker home with a single.
But Perryville came right back in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on hits from the first three batters (Amber Keene, Ashley Meekins and Lydia Hill), and a throwing error on Boonsboro center fielder Dallas Kilgore.
The Panthers added two more in the third on four hits in a row -- a single from Hill, a double from Carly White, a single from Kaitlyn Griffin and a double from Mara Little.
Phillips pitched the first seven innings for Perryville, striking out five.
