Westminster Promotes Matt Study to Varsity Football Head Coach
When head coach Brad Wilson left the Westminster football program at the end of last season, athletic director Terry Molloy decided to promote from within, naming assistant coach Matt Study to the head coach of the varsity.
"The transition has gone very smoothly, as I have been prepared by Coach Wilson for such a move," Study said. "Coach Wilson has moved me throughout the program over the last seven years, taking on various roles. I do what I do, and think for the most part, based on what Coach Wilson has mentored me to do."
The promotion is especially exciting for Study because he is an alum of Westminster, graduating from the Carroll County School in 1995.
"This is truly a dream. I remember sitting in homeroom in 1994 next to one of my best friends, and now assistant coach, Jim Stull. We would say to each other 'Wouldn't it be cool to come back to this place one day and take over the program,'" Study said. "I bleed Columbia blue, black and white. Every time I walk onto Ruby Field, I still get the same chills that I did when I first played as a 9th grader."
On the field, Study is taking over a team that finished 6-4 last season and missed qualifying for the MPSSAA state playoffs. Westminster last made the playoffs in 2013.
"Our goals for this year are to make the playoffs and go as deep as we can. We return many players who either started, or made contributions on varsity last year," Study said. "I helped Coach Wilson build what we have and I want to continue that. I want players who are committed to the team, the classroom and to being the best son, student, citizen and player that they can be."
