MPSSAA Field Hockey championships

CLASS 1A

Senior Lexi Butler scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Pocomoke High School to a 5-0 victory over Patuxent High School in the MPSSAA Class 1A state field hockey title game.

Senior Mckenize Beauchamp also scored twice for the Warriors, who won their 19th state title.

Butler opened the scoring at 7:12 of the first half when she beat Patuxent goalie Chloe South off a scrum in front of the cage.

Butler scored again at 14:23 of the half off a rebound to make it 2-0 Warriors.

Butler had a half-dozen scoring chances the rest of the half, the best coming with just under 3 minutes to play when South made three good saves in a row on Butler, who was directly in front of the cage.

Patuxent had an apparent goal waved off at the 7-minute mark of the half when Kenna Tejchman hit the back of the cage, but saw the referee disallow the score because the penalty corner entry pass did not clear the circle.

The Warriors came right back and scored on the ensuing possession, with Beauchamp scoring on an assist from Butler to make it 3-0. Dani Batze added a goal on a nifty backhander from about 12 yards out to make it 4-0. Beauchamp then added her second goal with just over 6 minutes to play.

CLASS 4A

Severna Park High School used goals from Eva Klaus and McKenna Lee and a stifling defense to beat Wootton High School 2-0 for the MPSSAA Class 4A state field hockey title.

It was the Falcons' 23rd state field hockey crown.

"This might be the best one yet," said Klaus, a senior. "It's really meaningful to the seniors.

"It's the last time we were going to step out on this field. We wanted to leave it all out there."

Klaus opened the scoring after nearly 25 minutes of scoreless play. Klaus tipped a Lindsay Ladas pass that came from outside the circle into the top right corner of the net, past Wootton's Amanda Jordan.

And that's how the evenly-played first half ended. Both teams had two penalty corners.

Lee gave Severna Park a 2-0 lead when she lofted a shot over Jordan and into the cage from about 14 yards out. Lee's goal came off a corner and was assisted by Klaus.

Lee "has the best aerials I've ever seen," Klaus said. "She does it every day in practice."

CLASS 3A

Junior Anna Farley scored on a pretty spin move off a penalty corner with 2:55 to play to give Bel Air a 2-1 victory over defending champion Westminster in the MPSSAA Class 3A field hockey title game at Washington College.

It was Bel Air's first field hockey title since 1977.

Westminster freshman Haleigh Moore opened the scoring at 20:17 of the first half when she put one past a diving Bel Air goalie Selena Garcia off a corner.

Farley got the Bobcats even with 1:58 to play in the half when she put a neat reverse chip past Westminster goalie Kerry Virtz. Karsyn Shek assisted on the play.

Emily Grglewski, a 2012 Bel Air graduate in her first year as coach of the Bobcats, said Farley, who has committed to Georgetown, is a "legacy player" at Bel Air.

"With her entire personality, she has lifted this team," Grglewski said.

Garcia stopped two Westminster scoring chances 7 minutes into the second half. She made a nice save on Kathleen Kohr, then foiled a tip-in attempt by Madi Macera 30 seconds later. And just a minute later, Garcia got help from the post to keep the game tied.

CLASS 2A

Hereford High School won its second straight MPSSAA Class 2A field hockey championship Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Marriotts Ridge High School at Washington College.

"To win two in two years is really exciting for us," Hereford Coach Caitlin Duvall said.

Hereford's first half goal came off a corner when Emily Endres took a feed from Dana Meehling about 14 yards from the cage and beat goalie Miranda Alam.

It was the fourth corner of the half for the Bulls, who carried play in the first 30 minutes. Marriotts Ridge didn't have a corner until there was 1:34 left. And Hereford had a number of good chances that weren't converted, including Rachel Karwacki's shot off the post 12 minutes in.

Marriotts Ridge's best chance came 7 1/2 minutes into the second half when Hereford goalie Camryn Kelbaugh left her cage to try to beat a Mustang forward to a loose ball. But the ball came to the Mustangs' Allie McAuley in front of the cage, and McAuley's shot was stopped by defender Dana Meehling.

Karwacki got on the board 12 minutes into the second half when she put her own rebound past goalie Katie Garman, who replaced Alam to start the half, giving Hereford a 2-0 lead.

"The first shot didn't go in, but I didn't give up," Karwacki said. "I shot it again and it went in."
