Keaser Classic Wrestling Tournament Roundup

MIAA school St. Paul's won this past weekend's 7th annual Keaser Classic wrestling tournament hosted by North County. St. Paul's scored a 537.53. Whitman, who won the event last year, finished second with 466.43 points, while Broadneck came in third with a score of 450.27. 14 different teams from across Maryland participated in the tournament, representing seven different counties.

The tournament is named in honor of famed Brooklyn Park High School graduate Lloyd "Butch" Keaser, the first African-American to medal in modern Olympic wrestling history and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member. Keaser won the silver medal at the 1976 Olympics in Canada.

Whitman had three wrestlers win their weight classes- Clark Boinis (113), James Bamberger (138) and Mitch Fenton (152). The Vikings also had a trio of second place finishers in Chris Habibian (106), Marcos Solloso (170) and John Luke Iglesias (195).

North County, the hosts of the tournament, were led by Montez Coleman (113) and Juwan Smith (138), who both placed third in their weight classes.

There were three other wrestlers who won their weight classes from CSZ jurisdictions- Berkley Todd, (126, Digital Harbor), DeAndre Reed (145, Digital Harbor) and Chuk Kalu (285, Western Tech).

The coaches voted Western Tech for the Team Sportsmanship Award. Reed earned the honor of Oustanding Lower-Weight wrestler, while Fenton was the Outstanding Upper-Weight wrestler.
