Century High School Tennis Star Thriving on National Level
Century High School junior Leah Sharkey told the Carroll County Times that it was a tough decision, but one she does not regret.
"I knew it would be better for me in the long run if I just focused on practicing, focused on the tournaments that I know are going to help me."
The Times named Sharkey their 2017 Girls Tennis Player of the Year, but she left the school's team to focus on matches at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) level.
She hopes that playing in larger tournaments against nationally-ranked competition will help her in the college recruitment process. The Tennis Recruiting Network lists Sharkey as a two-star recruit, and the 11th-ranked recruit in Maryland.
According to the Times, Sharkey has not ruled out re-joining the Century team for her senior year. Former Century and Sacred Heart University standout Paige Olson (Century class of 2012) did the same thing after winning the Times' Player of the Year award as a freshman in 2009.
