Tuscarora Volleyball Thriving in 2015
With their 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-23) victory over Urbana last night, the Tuscarora volleyball team improved to 4-1. In addition to Urbana, the Titans have beaten Middletown, South Hagerstown and Westminster this year. Their lone loss was a 3-1 decision against North Hagerstown.
Tuscarora volleyball is a blend of youth and experience this year. The Titans have three freshmen, a sophomore, five juniors and three seniors. Their leader on the court has been Maddie Roat, who has averaged five kills per set, and has a total of 84 kills this season. Ysabel Weaver has been in excellent form as a setter with 128 assists and 48 digs while Zarah White has been superb as the team's libero, leading the team with 54 digs.
"The team is not made out of perfect players, but we are striving to be the perfect team," head coach Ricardo Vera said. "The team was able to work together very early in our practices. The girls are having fun playing and they get along."
Looking ahead, the Titans' season will only get tougher. The team plays in the very competitive Central Maryland Conference which is comprised of Frederick County powerhouses like Oakdale and Linganore. Tuscarora is also a member of the 3A West division for the postseason. The two previous MPSSAA 3A state champions came from the West division- Damascus in 2013, and North Hagerstown last year. While the road ahead looks tough, if Tuscarora's start is any indication, the Titans will be a difficult team to play against in 2015.
