Boys 4A/3A
Severna Park only led Churchill for three seconds, but it was the most important three seconds of the game. Jack Thomas scored right before the final buzzer went off to give the Falcons their seventh state championship, and second in a row, with a 7-6 victory
Each team took a turn to shut out its opponent in a quarter during the first half.
It was Churchill who had the advantage in the first quarter. The Bulldogs scored three times, all in the final five minutes of the quarter. Jack Taylor broke through first, and fourteen seconds later Spencer Knife doubled Churchill's lead. Reed Moshyedi found the net with 1:04 remaining in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Goalkeeper Alex Crombie notched four saves during the quarter, and six total in the half.
In the second quarter it was Severna Park's turn to stymie Churchill. The Falcons two goals came within a three minute period. Trevor Patschorke found the net first, followed by Chase Cope. Goalkeeper Shane Carr came through with two saves for Severna Park, and just like Crombie, finished with six total saves in the first half.
The third quarter saw each team score two goals. Knife got his second goal of the game with 8:48 remaining in the fram, but Cian Chung responded with a goal for Severna Park less than two minutes later. Thomas scored for Severna Park with 3:38 left in the third quarter to tie the contest at four. However, Churchill got a buzzer beater from Ryan Leonard, who scored with one second remaining on the clock to give Churchill a 5-4 lead heading to the final period.
That advantage was short lived however as Patschorke got his second goal of the game for Severna Park less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. After a few tense minutes in which both teams had chances to score, Knife found the back of the net for the third time to give Churchill the lead with 4:38 remaining. Patschorke answered though with 1:53 remaining in the contest. After a few frantic moments, Severna Park called timeout with nine seconds remaining and in possession. It was then that Thomas made his mark, scoring from close range to give Severna Park its lone lead of the night, which was enough to give them another state title.
Girls 2A/1A
A young Century team won its program's ninth straight title in impressive fashion, topping Fallston 13-5. Century features 10 freshmen on its roster, including Grace Bruce, who led all scorers with five goals, while also tallying an assist.
Century never trailed as Michaela Connolly scored the first goal of the game in less than four minutes. Sarah Dudick responded quickly for Fallston, but Connolly got her second moments later, and Christina Haspert added another one to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. Emily Solak cut into Century's lead, but Bruce scored her first of the game to give Century another two goal advantage.
After Zoe Hulbert scored for Fallston, Century exploded for a three goal burst over a six minute period. Bruce scored on either side of a Julia Hatmaker effort. The Knights failed to keep their four goal advantage through the half though as Jesse Brennan scored for Fallston with 1:19 remaining to make it a 7-4 Century advantage.
The Knights blitzed Fallston after play resumed, scoring four straight goals through Bruce, Hatmaker, Haspert and Connolly. Kelly Emge brought one back for Fallston with 14:53 remaining in the game but after Bruce scored again, the Cougars trailed 12-5 with 7:23 remaining. Abby Bloomer scored the final goal of the game with four minutes remaining to give Century its 13-5 advantage.
In addition to Bruce, Connolly had a standout day for the Knights with three goals and three assists.
Boys 2A/1A
Southern from Anne Arundel County rode its prolific offense to its first ever state championship, as the Bulldogs topped South Carroll 20-7. Overall shot attempts played a big role- Southern had 45 total, while South Carroll managed 21. It was an all-around performance for Southern, but Ben DeBlauw stood out with eight goals.
It was an even first quarter that saw Southern score the first two goals through James O'Brien and Brandon Thomas. South Carroll hit back with goals from Jake Klein and Kyle Worsley, before Southern regained the lead with 10 seconds left in the frame through DeBlauw.
The second quarter was dominated by Southern as the Bulldogs managed to score the first five goals of the period. O'Brien got the first before DeBlauw scored four straight. Worsley finished Southern's streak with 3:12 remaining in the quarter, and Sam Crossman added to South Carroll's total less than a minute later. However, Southern got the last say of the half when Logan Clingerman netted with just under two minutes to go.
Southern's offense continued to thrive in the second half. The Bulldogs scored six times, including the first three, of the third quarter. DeBlauw scored three more, while Colin Phipps, Thomas and Clingerman all scored as well. South Carroll continued to get good games from Worsley, who scored his third, while Jake MacKenzie and Jake Snell also scored.
The Bulldogs scored the only goals of the final quarter. Phipps recorded his second, O'Brien netted his third, Elias Hutchinson scored two and Ryland Collison nabbed his first.
Southern also got an excellent game from Nic Pomerlau, who won 17 faceoffs.
