C. Milton Wright Softball Head Coach Russell Kovach Stepping Down

When the C. Milton Wright softball team takes the diamond next March it'll be the first time since 2008 the program will have someone other than Russell Kovach as head coach.

Kovach, who teaches biology, has decided to leave C. Milton Wright to teach in Wicomico County. He is unsure if he will continue to coach softball next year.

"The opportunity to coach such great teams and players plus work with such a professional and knowledgeable coaching staff will always be among my greatest honors and most cherished memories," Kovach wrote in an email announcing his departure from the program.

Kovach's teams have maintained C. Milton Wright's strong softball tradition. The program has never suffered a losing season, and only one in which the team finished .500.

Before this season, C. Milton Wright had been a frequent participant at the softball state tournament under Kovach, winning regional titles on six separate occasions, but had never won a state championship.

That changed on May 27 when C. Milton Wright topped Huntingtown 6-1 to win the 3A state title behind a complete game performance from pitcher Katie Murphy, and a five RBI effort from Michelle Cisco. He leaves C. Milton Wright as the program offers a lot of potential- the Mustangs only had one senior on their roster this year.

For Kovach, one of the joys was being able to coach against high quality opponents like Eastern Tech, Archbishop Spalding, Mount de Sales and Dulaney in addition to the tough competition the Mustangs face within the UCBAC. He takes particular pride in having coached in one of the strongest softball divisions in the state.

"I will fondly look back on the rivalries C. Milton has had with follow UCBAC teams," Kovach wrote. "I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank fellow UCBAC coaches- most notably Kathleen Donaldson, Rusty Moore, Dave Ruark, Kim Evans, and the dynamic duo of Russ Morgan and Ed Abshagen at Bo Manor- all coaches that made for competitive games that were great fun to both coach and watch."
