Dulaney's Benjamin Made Name For Herself on the Mat
Founded in 1965, Dulaney High School has seen generations of star athletes walk through its halls. The best of the best are honored with a spot on the school's Wall of Fame. 2019 graduate Destiny Benjamin received the honor this year after graduating as one of the most accomplished female wrestlers in Maryland history.
Benjamin racked up eight state titles over her high school career, including winning each of the past two MPSSAA girls state wrestling tournaments.
Benjamin also bridged the gender gap in the sport; she was Dulaney's first ever female wrestling captain. She also became the first girl to qualify for the 3A/4A North regional tournament.
Benjamin says she was inspired to wrestle by watching combat sports like MMA.
"Wrestling is basically the only sport in high school where you can hurt people legally, so I was like, 'I might as well give it a shot,' and I tried out," she told the Baltimore Sun.
Benjamin was chosen as the Towson Times 2019 Athlete of the Year. Benjamin will wrestle next year at Ferrum College in Virginia. You can read the Baltimore Sun article in its entirety here.
