Damascus wins Class 3A FB title
Colby Starheim picked off three passes to lead Damascus to a 14-12 victory over Franklin and their second straight MPSSAA Class 3A state championship Thursday night at a chilly Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
The Swarmin' Hornets of Montgomery County made two first-half touchdowns stand up. Senior Markus Vinson scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter, and junior Matthew Betterelli caught a 37-yard TD pass from junior quarterback John Allan Furgeson for the Damascus scores. Junior Baires, a freshman, added both extra points.
Franklin, of Baltimore County, couldn't overcome five turnovers -- four interceptions and a lost fumble. The Indians were also hurt by 10 penalties for 90 yards, one of which wiped out a touchdown.
Senior quarterback Joshua Turner scored on a 2-yard run for Franklin in the second quarter, and senior running back Justin Spence scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter. The Indians' Gerson Soriano pulled his conversion attempt on the first TD to the left, and Turner was stopped on a two-point try after the second TD.
Damascus won despite having only 105 yards of total offense -- 39 rushing and 66 passing, and six first downs. Franklin had 246 yards of total offense, 158 rushing and 88 passing, and 12 first downs.
