Westminster Owls Volleyball
The Westminster Owls volleyball team is coming off one of the strongest seasons in the history of their program. The Owls finished with a 10-9 overall mark, with four of those wins coming in the MPSSAA playoffs. During that playoff run, Westminster topped the highest ranked team in their section, Towson. After the upset over Towson, the Owls beat Bel Air to claim the school's first regional championship, and state tournament appearance, for volleyball. The Owls' season ended in the semifinals against Glenelg.
Westminster expects to have a blend of experience and youth on their team for 2015. They have a few key players coming back from the 2014 edition of the team, led by senior setter Jessie Karcz, a 2nd team MVAL All-Conference selection, as well as a 2nd team All-Carroll County selection last year. The Owls will also rely on senior duo Kristen Bishop, who averaged twelve kills a game in the playoffs last year, and Jen Gavin, who is a very useful utility player. Westminster's coach Ed Benish will also have to rely on younger players who are not as experienced.
"With many players in 9th grade having never played before, we have to outwork our opponents throughout the preseason and beyond," Benish said. "With the new independent Carroll County Athletic League, the top four schools in the county have very competitive schedules."
Despite having a difficult schedule on the horizon, Benish is confident his Owls can succeed as they did in 2014.
"We're looking to play to our strengths, persevere beyond any challenges, and expect the best out of teammates and coaches daily."
