Baltimore County All-Stars Win Battle of the Counties Baseball Tournament
The Baltimore County baseball squad won the four team all-star tournament called Battle of the Counties this past weekend. Baltimore finished first ahead of all-star squads from Howard, Anne Arundel and Montgomery Counties. Baltimore won their opening game against Montgomery 9-7. Brandon Frasier (Sparrows Point) led the way for Baltimore. Frasier smacked a triple, contributed two RBI's and scored three runs. On the mound, he worked the seventh and final inning to get the save. Austin Sweren (Franklin) also had three hits and an RBI.
Baltimore faced Howard in the championship game. The pitching combination of Robbie Mays (Hereford) and Colin Fowble (Parkville) kept Howard off the scoreboard until the final inning, when Howard rallied to tie and force extra innings. Baltimore required some extra inning heroics to see off Howard and win the game. Danny Bruno (Catonsville) doubled to lead off the eighth, and Josh Janey (Parkville) followed that up with an infield single. Corey Ryan (Patapsco) then knocked both in with a double. Frasier then contributed with his fourth triple of the day (3rd in the game). The Howard all-stars got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to catch Baltimore, who won the game 8-5.
Dundalk's coach Shawn Tormey was the head coach for the Baltimore squad. "19 kids from 11 different Baltimore County schools made winning this event important to themselves," Tormey said. "It was a 9-hour day in the hot summer sun, and we got a full effort from a full roster. This is a time of year when high school seniors are participating in a lot of memorable activities. These talented young men gave themselves one hell of a memory to add to their list."
