Poolesville Girls Basketball Unbeaten This Season
With their 65-39 victory over previously undefeated Montgomery Blair last night, Poolesville's girls basketball team improved to 4-0 this season. The Falcons have been in fine form so far this season, outscoring their opponents on average by 20 points a game.
The team's success comes as no surprise to head coach Jamie Jamison. The Falcons have a strong foundation from last year, when they finished 15-9 as a young team. The team had two freshmen in their starting lineup, and only one senior, who didn't even play until later in the year due to injury.
This year, the team features six seniors, three juniors and four sophomores.
"I am very happy with our 4-0 start and I am very proud of my team and how they've played," said Jamison. "Not every game has been perfect, but they've done a great job stepping up, erasing silly mistakes and not letting adversity get us down."
The team has proven to be versatile thus far, adjusting their game plan to match how their opponent plays. Poolesville will routinely look to see if they have an advantage inside to start a game and if they do, they'll keep going there with the ball. If the advantage isn't there, the Falcons will go to their perimeter shooting game.
Up to this point, it's a strategy that hasn't failed yet.
"The girls are doing a much better job of adapting to various game plans and executing whatever our plan, or in-game change is," said Jamison. "Having a team with experience has really helped there. We've also been working very hard and have improved our team defense, our scoring in transition and on the inside."
Sophomore Erin Green has proven herself to be the team's most consistent scoring threat. She's averaging 14 points per game.
Seniors Casey Harkins and Isabelle Durkin, in addition to sophomore Kelliann Lee, have been excelling at the guard position. Erin Sparrow and Kristen Darragh have also been essential for the team, adding strength and steel to their inside game.
Jamison also noted that the team would not have the success they've been enjoying if it weren't for the team's upperclassmen.
"Our six seniors have done a great job of leading both on and off the court," said Jamison. "They're working really hard to talk on defense and encourage their teammates."
Poolesville girls basketball could be in the midst of a special season. For now though, the team wants to stick to the basics and not get caught up in their fast start.
"I want the girls to play with energy, enthusiasm, grit and execute. We have to be tough on the boards, and communicate on defense," said Jamison. "All in all, I would like us to continue to play tough team defense and execute a balanced attack on offense.
