Week 1 Friday Football Roundup
Unfortunately, the main talking point of the first night for MPSSAA high school football was the rain. Multiple games had to get called early, or pushed to Saturday as a result of the weather. Affected games included Middletown vs North Carroll, Watkins Mill vs Frederick and Rockville vs Walter Johnson. Despite the rain, there were still some exciting results and big upsets on Friday.
One big upset happened in Anne Arundel County. The South River Seahawks, who only won two games last year, won 20-17 against Broadneck. Broadneck is the defending Anne Arundel County champion, and had an undefeated regular season in 2014. South River scored the winning touchdown with 44 seconds remaining in the game on a 4th down attempt.
Howard High defeated Reservoir in Howard County play, winning 14-6. The Lions relied on two touchdowns thrown by QB Casey Crawford, one of which was an 80 yard pass to wide receiver Cameron Carlyle in the first quarter. Crawford threw his second touchdown to Tanner Scaife, also in the first quarter. The Howard defense was superb, only allowing one touchdown on an 11 yard run.
Eastern Tech had a blowout victory in Week 1, storming past Owings Mills 49-6. The Mavericks got big performances from fullback Brandon Hlavach and tailback Ian McBorrough, who each finished with two touchdowns. Hlavach had two rushing touchdowns, one from 3 yards out and another from 14. McBorrough had a 50 yard run for a touchdown, as well as a receiving one for 39 yards. The Mavericks defense also put points up on the board- Tyliegh Horton recorded a safety, Fawad Malik had a pick-6 and Jared Lyles had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Franklin, the defending 3A state champs, had a disappointing opening weekend. The Indians lost to MIAA powerhouse McDonogh 35-21. Franklin's Jimmy Lahay threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions. Murad Hussain had an excellent night for the Indians, recording three catches for 63 yards and one touchdown. He also had seven tackles. The Franklin defense was led by linebacker Sam Botchway, who had 11 tackles.
Two Montgomery County powers, Damascus and Quince Orchard, did battle on Friday, with Damascus winning 39-17. Damascus was the 3A state runner up in 2014, while Quince Orchard lost a close game in the 4A West regional final last year to eventual state champion, Northwest. Jake Funk was the star of the show for Damascus, rushing for 257 yards and four touchdowns. The Swarmin' Hornets had 407 rushing yards as a team.
