Seneca Valley 14 - Northwest 7
Seneca Valley (pictured above) topped Northwest High 14-7 on Friday in a battle of two teams from Germantown. For winning this big rivalry game, Seneca Valley will have the coveted Kings Trophy in their possession for the next year. Northwest has been the state champion at the 4A classification for the past two years.
The Screaming Eagles were led by running back Darius Golston, who had 116 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Golston's big play came in the second quarter, when he caught a 32 yard touchdown reception to put Seneca Valley up 14-0. Adrian Platt also had a big day on the ground for Seneca Valley, finishing with 68 yards rushing. Quarterback Clarence Gaskins had a solid game for the Screaming Eagles, completing 7 of 11 passes for 153 yards.
The first touchdown for Seneca Valley was scored by Dione Jordan, who jumped on a Northwest fumble and ran it back 60 yards for a touchdown.
Seneca Valley will host Churchill next Friday in their next game.
South Hagerstown 37 - Urbana 7
South Hagerstown (pictured above, photo from South Hagerstown High School Sports, Clubs and Activities) from Washington County got their first win of 2015, beating traditional Frederick County powerhouse Urbana, 37-7. South Hagerstown, who lost their Week 1 contest against Mervo from Baltimore City, is now 1-1.
The Rebels' had multiple standouts on offense. Running back Darian Robinson ran for 272 yards on 23 attempts, picking up one touchdown along the way. Robinson averaged 11.8 yards per carry. Quarterback TJ Peer also had a big day for South Hagerstown, completing 7 of 10 passes. He threw three touchdowns, without having any turnovers. Peer finished with a QB rating of 197.1. Marcel Jones caught three passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns. James Brooks had one catch, a 10 yard touchdown reception.
On defense, Jordan Douglass recorded an interception return for a touchdown. The Rebels' other defensive standouts were James Brooks and Austin Shelton.
South Hagerstown will see if they can jump above .500 next Friday when they travel to Carroll County to play South Carroll.
Gaithersburg 28 - Watkins Mill 7
Gaithersburg (pictured above, from MoCo Daily) used a basic, but very effective strategy in their game against Watkins Mill- run the ball, and run it a lot. The Trojans only attempted five passes, while they handed the ball off 41 times. As a team, they ran for 252 yards.
The majority of Gaithersburg's carries came from three players. Carlin Bason had two rushing touchdowns for the Trojans. He racked up 50 yards on 9 carries. Christopher Harris ran for 90 yards on 11 carries. Harris provided the big play of the game when he broke loose for a 73 yard touchdown run. Marqel Simpkins got the most carries of any Trojan, rushing the ball 13 times for 84 yards.
Gaithersburg only completed one pass on the night, but it was for a touchdown. Denzel Dalton caught the 17 yard pass.
On defense, CC Martinez was everywhere for Gaithersburg, finishing with 7 tackles, including one for a loss. Sidrick Ofori had 5 tackles, including two for a loss. The Trojans defense recorded 3 sacks, coming from Josh Santandrea, Malik McDonald and Jack Creamer. Ahmad DeVaughn had an interception.
Gaithersburg, who is now 1-1, hosts Paint Branch next Friday.
Franklin 40 - Perry Hall 12
Franklin bounced back from a disappointing Week 1 loss to MIAA powerhouse McDonogh by topping Baltimore County rival Perry Hall, 40-12.
The Indians got a good performance from quarterback Jimmy Lahay, who went 10 for 20 for 130 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. Wide receiver Steven Smothers had five catches for 65 yards. Smothers also contributed a 92 yard rushing touchdown. Damon Hazelton caught one pass for a touchdown, and also returned an interception for a touchdown.
Kareem Felder contributed four tackles, an interception, and a 75 yard kick return for a touchdown. Mike Gibson had seven tackles, as well as a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Franklin will have their home opener next Friday against Woodlawn.
