Tim Small Named Head Coach of Williamsport Football
Tim Small has been promoted from assistant coach to head coach of the Williamsport varsity football team. Small, an alum of Williamsport, is excited to become the head coach of the Wildcats.
"I have a natural affinity for the school and this community. I was raised here and am actually raising my own family in this community," said Small. "The lessons I learned about myself, teamwork, and the world around me while wearing a Wildcat uniform are extremely important to me. I hope to impart those lessons on future generations of young men at Williamsport."
Small played at Williamsport from 1995-1998, and was an All-County selection at linebacker in 1997 and 1998. He continued his career at Frostburg State University, where he was a part of the 1999 Bobcat team which won the Atlantic Central Football Conference. Small now takes over for Vince Ahearn as head coach of the Wildcats, who finished 6-4 last year and barely missed qualifying for the MPSSAA Class 2A state tournament.
"I learned an enormous amount from Coach Ahearn and consider him a mentor and friend. His knowledge of high school football, his work ethic, and his love for teaching, among many other things are unparalleled and have helped me immensely," said Small. "Coach Ahearn's stamp on this program will be long lasting."
While this will be his first stint as a varsity head coach, Small still brings a wealth of experience to the position. He has worked with every position group on both offense and defense during his two tenures as a varsity assistant for the Wildcats. Small has also been heavily involved in the team's game planning and team management. He is prepared to run a hard working program.
"First and foremost, we will play the game the right way and carry ourselves correctly. Our program will reflect discipline and excel through hard work," said Small. "Using spread gun philosophies, our offense will be balanced so as to control the tempo of the game. Defensively, we will run an attacking, adaptable 3-3 stack defense that will allow us to maximize our personnel."
Over the next couple years, Small is hoping to build off the success the Wildcats have had recently. He is hoping to build a well-rounded program.
"Our players will compete in every opportunity and will be exemplified by a quiet intensity. The young men in our program will be leaders in our school and community," said Small. "Long term our goal is to build a program that everyone can be proud of. Our student athletes will be successful not only on the field, but in the classroom, and as citizens."
