MPSSAA Lacrosse State Finals Day 2
BOYS CLASS 4A-3A
Severna Park High School used a suffocating defense and timely scoring from Trevor Patschorke to defeat Howard High School, 9-3, to win the MPSSAA Class 4A-3A Boys Lacrosse championship.
The Falcons (17-2) were never able to make it comfortable for themselves, but Howard (14-5) was never able to cut the margin to less than four in the second half.
Time and again, Howard had long possessions that consisted of passes around the perimeter of the Severna Park defense, only to end with a turnover.
"That's a testament to our defensive coordinator Mickey Blum," Severna Park head coach Dave Earl said. "It's a testament to the players for buying in to what the coaches were talking about."
Said senior defender Joe Morrow: "Our defense played tremendously. We know we can single-handedly turn a game around."
The Falcons beat Howard earlier this season, 13-5.
"We just had a great group that battled all year, starting in September with workouts," Earl said. "Our goal this season never was to make it to this game. It was to get better every day. And we did that."
Mark Bruner got the Lions on the board first, about halfway through the first quarter, but it was all Severna Park after that.
Ethan Carr and Trevor scored 2 minutes apart at the end of the first quarter to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
And after Severna Park did a terrific job in killing a 1-minute penalty, Josh Coffman made a nice steal of a clearing pass by Howard goalie Collin McClelland and put a shot in from the top of the box to make it 3-1 Falcons.
Patschorke and Paul Ruppert closed out the first-half scoring for Severna Park.
"They played better than us today," Howard Coach Jimmy Creighton said. "We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times with turnovers. Some of that was due to their play. It seemed like every time we made a mistake, boom, it was a goal for them."
GIRLS CLASS 2A-1A
Lizzie Colson scored a state championship game record eight goals to lead Manchester Valley to a 22-3 victory over Fallston and the MPSSAA Class 2A-1A state championship Wednesday at Stevenson.
Colson, a senior who will play lacrosse for the University of Maryland in the fall, scored six times in the first half, tying the Class 1A record, as the Mavericks overwhelmed the Cougars, taking a 15-2 halftime lead.
The Mavericks also set an MPSSAA Class 1A for goals in a game, eclipsing the 17 that Glenelg scored in 2008.
Both Colson and Manchester Valley Coach Shelly Brezicki said they were unaware of the records.
"They (her teammates) all started cheering at the end of the game, and I was going, 'what, huh?'" Colson said. "The state championship is my favorite part. My stats are just icing on the cake."
Said Brezicki: Lizzie is not good by accident. There's a lot of hard work that she puts in. She hasn't missed a game in four years."
Fallston's Izzy Dallam actually opened the scoring, but Manchester Valley scored six times in a row -- four from Colson -- to take control of the game.
Colson scored her seventh goal, the record-breaker, 1:30 into the second half. The old record was held by Glenelg teammates Kristy Black and Alayna Markwordt, who both scored six in the 2008 state final. Colson also scored 12 points, breaking Black's record of 11 in a championship game.
Manchester Valley finished the season with a 19-1 record. Fallston finished at 12-7.
"We were actually 8-6 in the regular season, that's not really stellar," said Fallston coach Michael McTeague. But we continued to improve. And, with the exception of today, we were playing our best at the end of the season."

Ben Claffee scored four goals -- including three in an 8-minute span of the third quarter -- to lead Fallston High School to a 12-5 victory over Liberty High School in the MPSSAA Class 2A-1A boys lacrosse championship game Wednesday at Stevenson.
It was the first loss of the year for the Lions from Carroll County, who finished the year 19-1. Fallston finished 15-4.
Fallston, of Harford County, won its fourth state championship in the last five years. The Cougars lost in last year's regional finals.
It is the fifth state title for Fallston, and the fifth for head coach Matt Parks.
Parks said he thought early on that it would be Fallston's day.
"Pretty early," he said. "In about the fourth minute, I thought, 'we've got this.'
"We had prepared for this team (Liberty) pretty much all year, from a coaching standpoint," Parks said. "But I'm really surprised at the outcome in terms of goal differential."
Sam Gold scored three times for Fallston, and Matt Wollenweber, Dylan Wolf, Andy Stump, Cameron Linger and Justin Williams all scored once.
Mark Conway scored twice, and Mike Smith Noah Rohrer and Jack Boyer each scored one for Liberty.
"Sometimes it's just a matter of one team going out and executing its game plan better," said Liberty coach Mike Flemming.
"Our execution was jut off today."
