Magruder Girls Soccer Undefeated in 2015
The Magruder High School girls soccer team has enjoyed a great start to the 2015 season. The Colonels are 6-0, and have scored multiple goals in every game they've played. The team has had seven different players get on the score sheet, and has scored a total of 27 goals.
"We have been creating a number of scoring chances in most games. We have several players that can control the ball," head coach Scott Hughes said. "When we pass the ball quickly, we are able to free up teammates for shot opportunities."
The team has a strong presence coming from its sophomore class, but Hughes also thinks the Colonels have excellent leadership coming from their senior captains Deena DeSilva, Karina Lopez and Ify Aghanenu. DeSilva is a four year starter who has been a leader on defense since her first day on the team. Lopez is the team's creative force in the midfield, often controlling the game and looking to start attacks with killer passes. Aghanenu is the team's leading goalscorer with 11, and her positive attitude has spread to the rest of the team.
Magruder has jumped down from 4A to 3A, so they have a new schedule with a lot of new opponents on it. The team has already beaten teams Montgomery County teams like Poolesville, Seneca Valley and Paint Branch. Most recently, they beat Blake on the road 7-2.
Looking ahead, the team will have to contend with new teams in the postseason since they changed classifications. Hughes is hoping some of the tougher games on his team's schedule will properly prepare Magruder for the postseason.
"We are really looking forward to our game against Sherwood on October 13th. They are a good team with lots of seniors this year," Hughes said. "It think it will be a great game and should help us prepare for the playoffs."
