Arundel Softball
The softball team at Arundel High School in Anne Arundel County had a breakout 2015 campaign. After finishing 7-11-1 in 2014, the Wildcats put together one of the program's strongest seasons, finishing 18-5.
It was a streaky season for Arundel. They jumped out to an 8-0 start before dropping four in a row. After that four game losing streak, Arundel then reeled off 10 straight wins. The win streak was halted in the MPSSAA 4A East Regional Final against Leonardtown, where the Wildcats lost 1-0. It was the first regional final for Arundel since 1982.
Arundel is returning a lot of their talent from this past season, led by All-County outfielders Mikayla Meehan (senior) and Kaelyn Lavin (junior), as well as All-County catcher Tiffany Jerman (junior). The Wildcats are also bringing back their leadoff hitter in Cheyenne Starr (sophomore) and two key pitchers: Grace Palmieri (who got second team All-County) and Caroline Mills (sophomore).
Coach Lisa Mills, who was selected as the Anne Arundel Softball Coach of the Year, is confident her team can do well next year if they keep working hard, and continue to improve.
"We lost two starting seniors at leftfield and second base," Mills said. "However all the other starters are returning for the 2016 season and we had a deep bench in 2015. We are feeling very positive that we can have a similarly successful season in 2016 and a good chance to make it to the County and State Championship. A lot depends upon how hard the girls work on their travel teams to prepare."
