MPSSAA Swimming State Championships
1A/2A/3A Meet
For the second straight year, Poolesville swept the 1A/2A/3A meet, winning both the boys and girls competitions. It was an impressive display by the Falcons, who finished at least 100 points ahead of the second place finisher in both competitions.
On the boys side, Poolesville finished with 325 points, while second place finisher Rockville ended the competition with 198 points. The Falcons were able to win the competition despite finishing first in just one competition: the 200 yard freestyle relay (Conner Dunathan, David Umansky, Theodore Jagodits, Jisu Kim).
The Poolesville boys won the state championship by finishing in the top four of every competition, including finishing second in the 200 yard medley relay (Justin Kim, Benjamin Kaplan, Kevin Song, Dunathan) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Justin Kim, Jisu Kim, Jagodits, Joshua Aurdos). The team also got third place finishes in four competitions: 200 yard freestyle (Jagodits), 200 yard IM (Kaplan), 100 yard butterfly (Jisu Kim) and the 100 yard backstroke (Justin Kim).
The Falcons placed two finishers in the top 10 in seven different competitions. In total, Poolesville had 14 finishes in the top five throughout the whole meet.
In the girls competition, Poolesville finished with 370 points, topping Easton which finished in second place with 265 points.
The girls won four different races: the 200 yard medley relay (Katarina Lechner, Sayak Vaules, Arona Baigal, Theresa Nardone), the 100 yard butterfly (Fanny Wu), the 200 yard freestyle relay (Vaules, Julia Wang, Wu, Nardone) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Rachel Ryan, Wu, Lechner, Wang).
Poolesville was aided by five second place finishes: the 200 yard freestyle (Wang), the 200 yard IM (Lechner), the 50 yard freestyle (Vaules), the 100 yard freestyle (Wang) and the 500 yard freestyle (Lechner). The Falcons also got third place finishes in the 200 yard IM (Wu), 50 yard freestyle (Nardone), 100 yard backstroke (Ryan) and the 100 yard breaststroke (Nardone).
Much like the boys team, the girls did an excellent job of placing two competitors in the top 10 of different races, doing so in eight competitions. In total, Poolesville had 16 top five finishes throughout the entire competition.
3A/4A Boys
Richard Montgomery won the boys 3A/4A championship on the strength of four first place finishes. The Rockets finished with 319 points, while Churchill placed second with 265.5 points. Bethesda-Chevy Chase accrued 208 points to place third.
The Rockets won 200 yard medley relay (Matt Nguyen, Kenny Afolabi-Brown, Bouke Edskes, Greg Afolabi-Brown), the 200 yard IM (Edskes), 100 yard butterfly (Edskes) and the 200 yard freestyle relay (Greg Afolabi-Brown, Edskes, Simon Li and Kenny Afolabi-Brown). The four wins accounted for 120 of Richard Montgomery's points.
Richard Montgomery also got a second place performance from Kenny Afolabi-Brown (50 yard freestyle), as well as a trio of third place results in the 100 yard backstroke (Nguyen)), 100 yard breaststroke (Kenny Afolabi-Brown) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Connor Din, Jonathan Mendley, David Zhang, John Clado). The Rockets also had four events in which they were able to place two swimmers in the top 10.
Richard Montgomery's last state championship came in 2014. The team finished second at last year's state finals meet.
3A/4A Girls
After finishing second at the 2015 state finals meet, Sherwood won the girls 3A/4A title, finishing with 310.5 points while second place Walter Johnson finished with 237 points. Churchill rounded out the top three by finishing with 225.5 points.
The Warriors won four events which gave them a whopping 120 points, all of which senior Morgan Hill had a hand in- the 200 yard medley relay (Margarita Ryan, Erica Hjelle, Hill, Emma Eustance) the 50 yard freestyle (Hill), 100 yard freestyle (Hill) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Sophia Ryan, Margarita Ryan, Jaimy Wenhold, Hill).
The team got second place performances from Grace Giddings (500 yard freestyle) and Hjelle (100 yard backstroke), as well as a third place showing from Kaitlin Gravell (200 yard IM).
Sherwood also made it a habit of placing two competitors in the top 10 of an event, doing so four times.
