Fallston Graduate Chase Kalisz Qualifies to Swim at 2016 Olympics
Chase Kalisz, a graduate of Fallston High School in Harford County, became the first swimmer to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Team by winning the 400-meter individual medley at the US Olympic Qualifiers in Omaha, Nebraska. He finished the race in 4:09.54, which is the second fastest the event has been completed in the world this year. It will be Kalisz's first Olympics.
The top two swimmers in the event qualify for the team. Kalisz's teammate at University of Georgia, Jay Litherland, finished second. The duo beat out Ryan Lochte, a high profile competitor who has won 11 Olympic medals including five golds, to get the two spots.
Kalisz comes from a family of talented swimmers. His older sister Courtney competed at the US Olympic Qualifiers in 2008 and 2012. Kalisz's younger siblings Connor, who swims for Florida State, and Cassidy, who will begin her senior year at Fallston in August, are also competing at this year's qualifiers.
Kalisz's father Mike is the athletic director at Hereford High School in Baltimore County.
