Elkton Girls Basketball Already Doubles Win Total from Previous Season

The 2014-15 season was a tough one for the Elkton girls basketball team. The Cecil County School finished the campaign with just two wins. Elkton had 17 freshmen on the roster, and the mindset that the season would be a good learning experience for the players. While it was a difficult season, the players bought in to the project.

The team is starting to see positive results from the difficult circumstances they played in last year. Elkton, which is employing an up-tempo style with an emphasis on playing aggressive defense, has started this season 4-0. Among their four wins are North Harford, Harford Tech and The Tome School, all of which beat Elkton last year. The team has won their games by an average of 17 points.

"Coming into this season we are continuing to build and to function as a unit, but putting more of an emphasis on winning," head coach Chris Dunn said. "I expected we would be competitive this season, but did not think we would be 4-0."

Elkton is still made up predominately of underclassmen, but they have a few standout players who are excelling this season. Sophomore Vanessa Dunn is leading the way, averaging 22.25 points a game this season. As a freshman, Dunn finished second in Cecil County with 246 points scored despite suffering a season ending injury after just 12 games.

Junior Tynaya Segure is right behind Dunn with an average of 22 points per game. Freshman Courtney Hardy has also gotten her high school career off to a fast start with 33 points and 27 rebounds thus far this season.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Elkton already has a few games they've circled on their schedule as exciting opportunities to see how they've grown as a team.

"We are excited and looking forward to playing Fallston at the end of the season," Chris Dunn said. "We are also looking forward to playing two of our Cecil County opponents, Rising Sun and Bohemia Manor."

While the team is encouraged by their fast start, and hoping to rack up as many wins as possible, Elkton is still viewing this season as part of their rebuilding project. The hope is that soon the program will be a consistent winner.

"Our goal is to continue to develop while increasing our basketball IQ and decreasing our mistakes on the court. We are also continuing to develop our JV squad and freshman players for the future," Chris Dunn said. "This young group of girls has continued to impress me with their work ethic."
