Five Football Games to Watch: Week 10
Annapolis at Old Mill
Anne Arundel County's championship, as well as the top spot in the 4A East region, will be on the line when these two unbeaten teams battle it out.
Old Mill has been a traditional power in Anne Arundel County for some time, qualifying for 18 straight MPSSAA postseasons. The Patriots have won two state titles over that span with the most recent coming in 2011. This group looks capable of reaching the promise land again, going through its first nine games largely unchallenged. The closest game Old Mill has played this season was a 42-21 win over Arundel.
Annapolis has reached the MPSSAA playoffs for the second straight season, the first time since 2001-02 the Panthers have achieved that. With their 40-15 win against Glen Burnie in Week 9, Annapolis eclipsed its win total of eight from 2015. One team Annapolis could not solve in 2015 was Old Mill, losing back to back games against the Patriots, which included the first round of the playoffs.
This game is scheduled for 6:30 PM this Friday.
Fort Hill at Allegany
This contest features two undefeated 1A West teams battling to be the top team in their county, as well as two programs that have made the playoffs a combined 53 times.
Allegany comes into this game in excellent form, having won its past two games by a combined score of 98-0. The defense has been a constant for the Campers, recording four shutouts and only allowing 33 points all year. Allegany has only given up seven points against MPSSAA teams, and those points came in a 76-7 victory against Frederick.
Fort Hill enters this game atop the 1A West regional standings, accruing 85 points to Allegany's 81.70. Like Allegany, the Sentinels have won most of their games in blowouts, but the team did play the closest game of the year for either team- a 27-13 decision against South Hagerstown in Week 7. Fort Hill has won the past three 1A state titles.
These two are also battling to have home field advantage throughout the whole of the MPSSAA playoffs- these are the only two teams to go above 80 points accrued for the season.
This game is scheduled to 12:30 PM this Saturday at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
Queen Anne's at Kent Island
Queen Anne's County's two high schools square off in a contest that will determine which team will finish first in the 2A East region.
Kent Island is 9-0 this year and won its games by a combined score of 318-64. That doesn't mean the Buccaneers don't have some close game experience this season. The team won a close one with North Caroline back in Week 3, barely getting by with a 21-14 decision. Kent Island is looking to win back to back games against Queen Anne's having won this tilt in 2015 21-13.
Queen Anne's, which is 8-1, is looking to sure up a home playoff game. The Lions hold the number two seed in the 2A East region, but are tied with Elkton on record. The team's lone loss came against Sussex Central from Delaware, but since that defeat in Week 4, the Lions have found ways to win games. The team has won two close contests recently- a 26-20 decision against Easton in Week 5, and a 19-7 victory against North Caroline in Week 9.
Kent Island hosts Queen Anne's this Friday at 7:00 PM.
Liberty at Century
Century hosts Liberty to see which team will win Carroll County's 2016 regular season crown. Both teams are 8-1, but are undefeated in Carroll County play.
Century has been a program on the rise in recent years. The Knights won two games in 2014, before winning six last year. This year's team opened with a loss to Parkville, but have won their last eight to earn the program's third appearance in the MPSSAA playoffs. Century won a wild overtime contest against South Carroll last week, picking up a 34-32 decision.
Liberty is another non-traditional power that's begun to find some consistent success. The Lions reached the playoffs in 2014, making it two out of three years they've qualified in the highly competitive 2A West region. Liberty is also on a big winning streak, having reeled off seven straight since its loss to Walkersville in Week 2.
These two schools are also withing five miles of each other, making it a big time neighborhood rivalry game. Century won this game last year 20-14, but Liberty won it 36-0 in 2014.
The Knights host the Lions this Friday at 7:00 PM.
Richard Montgomery at Randallstown
This is an intriguing tilt featuring one of Montgomery County's best, as well as one of Baltimore County's finest.
Richard Montgomery, which is 8-1, has built on its breakout season in 2015 by reaching the playoffs once again. The Rockets are on a three game win streak, which includes a 35-0 decision against Poolesville in Week 7, as well as a close 28-27 victory against Clarksburg in Week 8. Richard Montgomery's offense has been quite consistent, scoring at least 28 points in all of its games but one. The team got the better of Randallstown last year, winning 30-14.
Randallstown has improved tremendously on its 3-7 record in 2015. The Rams' 8-1 mark has them in second place in the 2A North standings. The team's defense has been in fine form this year, recording five shutouts and only allowing opponents to go north of 10 points twice all year.
