Week 5 Friday Football Roundup
Glen Burnie 24 - South River 13
Glen Burnie (pictured above) picked up their first win of 2015 on homecoming weekend, beating South River 24-13. With the tough weather conditions today offered, the Gophers decided to keep the ball out of the air, and they did an excellent job of it.
Glen Burnie ran for over 300 yards as a team. Dami Adekunjo did the most damage, picking up 168 yards and two touchdowns on 26 attempts. Taylor Johnson also had a standout game, rushing for 103 yards on 11 attempts. Greg Avant rounded out the rushing attack with 52 yards on six carries. The offensive line which is comprised of Teriquo Johnson, Sammy Levy, Marlon Alvarado, James McDonald, Travis Herrington, Eric Powell, Raziel Durodoye and Ben Cornwell, had an excellent game.
Kenny Pitts led the Gopher defense with 11 tackles. Kylen Rebstock had six tackles and one interception. Serafin Sarduy had five tackled and recovered a tackle, while Tyler Gifford recorded four tackles and forced a fumble.
Glen Burnie will look to pick up their second win of the season next Friday night at Southern-AA.
Paint Branch 12 - Blair 7
This contest featured two of the more potent offenses in Montgomery County. Coming into this game, the least amount of points Blair had scored in a game was 23, while for Paint Branch it was 21. The weather and two talented defenses kept both offenses in check though and by the end of the game, Paint Branch did just enough to win the game, winning 12-7.
Paint Branch's Armani Ceballos threw for 202 yards and a touchdown. Ceballos also ran for 31 yards. His main target was Ivan Nnadi, who caught a touchdown. In total, Nnadi made six catches for a total of 78 yards. J.D. Guerrero also had a stand out game catching the ball, reeling in five catches for 66 yards.
On the ground, Justin Hockaday was Paint Branch's most effective runner, rushing for 46 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Gibbs Tinne also had a strong game, rushing for 40 yards on 6 carries.
The win makes Paint Branch 5-0, while it dropped Blair to 3-2. Paint Branch hosts Einstein next Friday at 6:30.
Middletown 50 - Frederick 14
With the difficult weather conditions, it should come as no surprise that a lot of teams around Maryland preferred to run the ball instead of pass the ball tonight. Middletown took that approach to a whole new level though. The Knights attempted one pass against Frederick, which fell incomplete. The rest of the time, Middletown ran the ball and ran it well, rushing for 271 yards and seven touchdowns as a team.
James Early got the most carries tonight, rushing for 88 yards on 10 carries and scoring one touchdown. Anthony Orsini only ran the ball six times, but rushed for 70 yards, averaging out to 11.7 yards a carry. Orsini also scored two touchdowns. Matt Evich rushed for two touchdowns, while Marquis Lauer and Adam Bain each ran for one.
Jace Denham led the Knights with five tackles on defense. Garrett Johnson had 4.5 tackles including two sacks. Will Davis, Jose Osorio, KJ Bromwell and Tyler Clemmer all had at least three tackles.
Middletown also got a good game from their special teams. The Knights recovered a safety on a Frederick punt attempt, and Daniel Pirrone had 94 yards returning punts. Their kickers also excelled despite difficult conditions. Bromwell was six for six on extra points, while punter Davis averaged 28.5 yards per attempt.
Middletown is now 2-3. The Knights will try to reach .500 next week when they travel to face Brunswick.
Hancock 20 - Washington 6
Hancock came from behind against Washington to win their game 20-6 on Thursday night. The Panthers were down 6-0 at halftime before scoring 20 straight points in the second half. The victory brings their record to 3-2.
Hancock's second half surge was led by quarterback Jared Hose. Hose threw two touchdowns, the first being a four yard pass to Jared Cubbage, and the second a 14 yard completion to Jesse Long. Hose was also effective on the ground, carrying the ball seven times for 49 yards and one touchdown.
The Panthers spread the ball around in their ground attack. Ean Mann led the way with eight carries for 57 yards. Jake Reed had seven carries for 51 yards and Ethan Souders contributed eight carries for 55 yards. Souders was also useful in the passing game, catching two passes for 39 yards.
Hancock's defense was led by the duo of Brad Walsh and Sam Haines. Walsh led all Panthers with 12 total tackles, while Haines had eight tackles, including two sacks.
Hancock will look to string together back to back wins for the first time in 2015 next week against The SEED School of Baltimore.
