Maryland Ranks 23rd in High School Athletics Participation
The National Federation of High School Associations recently released their annual statistics for participation in high school athletics. Across participation from both public and private institutions, Maryland had the 23rd highest participation in terms of number of students, a spot lower than the state finished last year despite having more athletes competing.
For public schools, an additional 1,998 athletes competed last school year in comparison to the 2013-14 school year. For boys, football had the most participants both in the state of Maryland and nationwide, while outdoor track and field had the most girls in Maryland. Nationwide the sport girls played the most was volleyball.
