Boys Lacrosse State Finals Preview

The boys state lacrosse tournament finals will take place from Monday, 5/20 through Wednesday, 5/22 at Paint Branch High School. Read about each matchup, including game times and how each team got here, below.

4A: (3) Howard v.  (1) Severna Park (Wednesday at 8 p.m.)

The Severna Park boys will be seeking their fourth straight 4A boys lacrosse title and ninth in school history (which would tie Hereford for most in MPSSAA history). The Falcons are 18-1 this season and coming off a convincing 12-4 victory over Winston Churchill in the state semifinals.

Howard, meanwhile, enters with a record of 13-5, having entered the playoffs as a 3 seed in the 4A North region. The Lions are no strangers to drama; their playoff wins have included a 4-3 win over Catonsville and a 6-5 win over Urbana. Howard won the only state lacrosse title in program history in 2015; this marks their fourth appearance in the championship game in the past six years.

3A: (1) Northern v. (1) Westminster (Wednesday at 4 p.m.)

The Westminster boys enter the 3A title game on a roll: last year's defending champions have won 36 straight games, including all 18 this year. They have scored at least 15 goals in all four of their playoff games this season, and their closest call was a 15-14 victory over Linganore to capture the 3A West regional title. A win would be the third in program history (2013, 2018).

This year's title game will be a rematch of last year's as the boys from Northern (18-1) advanced to their third straight 3A title game. They won the program's only title in 2017 before falling to the Owls last spring. Aside from a 4-3 close call against Huntingtown, Northern has outscored opponents 57-6 in the playoffs so far.

2A: (2) Glenelg v. (1) Century (Tuesday at 6 p.m.)

The 12-6 Glenelg boys survived a close call against Marriotts Ridge (a 6-5 overtime win) earlier in the playoffs, and have cruised in their past two matchups to reach the state final for the second time in the past three years. Glenelg will be looking for their first state title since 2011; they won all three of their previous championships from 2007-11.

The Century boys, on the other hand, reached their first state title game in program history by defeating Parkside on Friday. The Knights enter the game with a 16-2 record, having given up just 13 combined goals through their first four postseason games.

1A: (4) Sparrows Point v. (1) Patterson Mill (Monday at 5 p.m.)

The fourth-seeded Sparrows Point boys enter Monday's state championship game with a 9-8 record, but they have won when it counted most. After reaching the semi-finals last season for just the second time in program history, the Pointers made it to the state finals this year after defeating McDonough, 7-4, on Friday.

They face the daunting task of unseating the defending champions from Patterson Mill on Monday. After receiving a double-bye in the 1A East region, the Huskies have played like the team to beat, outscoring opponents 45-22 over their first three playoff games. This is Patterson Mill's fourth-ever appearance in the state lacrosse finals.
