MPSSAA Golf State Finals: Gray, Shah Capture Individual Titles, while Churchill and Marriotts Ridge Win Team Championships

After a long day of exciting MPSSAA state finals golf, fans and spectators were treated to an extra couple holes as the boys individual title required a playoff to decide who would be champion. Last year's winner Graham Hutchinson from Whitman and Churchill's Adam Gray both shot 70's in the semifinal round, and 69's on the finals, leaving them with 139 strokes over the two days.

The two both tied after the first hole of the playoff, making a second hole a requirement to decide who would be state champ. After a couple of strong drives on the fairway, Gray just edged out Hutchinson with some clutch putting to win the championship.

The individual victory for Gray capped off an exciting day for Churchill, who repeated as 3A/4A state champions in impressive fashion. The team shot a 572, which MPSSAA officials said is most likely a record for best performance by a team at a finals event. Oliver Whatley shot a 142, which put him in a four way tie for the fourth best score in the boys individual competition. Lena Capoccia shot 144 over the two days, which was the second best girls score. Dylan Rotter shot a 147 to round out the team score. Luke Schaap, who was only competing in the individual competition, shot a 144.

Walter Johnson finished second in the 3A/4A competition. The foursome of Noah Moss, Taso Scilaris, Jordan Bobb and Spencer Brody shot a 296, which would have been good enough to win the state title most years. Moss led the way, shooting a 140 and placing third in the boys individual competition, missing the playoff for the individual title by one stroke. Scilaris also had a great two rounds, finishing with a 144.

Marriotts Ridge won their fourth straight 1A/2A state championship, running away with it by a remarkable 39 strokes. The Mustangs quartet of Bennett Buch, Jackson Courtney, Nick Mejia and John Szymanski shot a 600. Courtney finished as the group's best with a 142, shooting 71's on both days. Buch shot a 144, Mejia had a 152 and Szymanski finished with 162.

Middletown finished second in the 1A/2A team competition with a 639. Jake Darr led the Knights with a 147, while Joey Weiland shot a 152.

In the girls individual competition, Delaney Shah did just enough to win her second straight state title by shooting a 142. Capoccia's 144 got her second place, while Magruder's Krystal Sung finished with a 148. Mt. Hebron's Josephine Jung and Howard's Jackie Cherry rounded out the top five with scores of 153 and 161.
