Old Mill Girls Basketball Still Unbeaten After Winning Waldorf Tournament
Few teams have gotten off to a better start than Old Mill's girls basketball team. The Patriots are 8-0 and have already won some silverware, winning the Waldorf Holiday Hoops Tournament over winter break. In the championship game of that tournament, Old Mill topped North Point 74-56.
It should come as no surprise that Old Mill is having a terrific start to this campaign. The Patriots had a strong season last year, which finished with them winning the MPSSAA 4A East championship and reaching the state semifinal round.
In total, the Patriots have eight returners from last season.
"We got a taste of the state tournament and it's motivation for us to get back to states and win it," head coach Rick Smith said. "With the players we had returning, we did expect a fast start this year."
Rebecca Lee has been a standout performer for Old Mill so far, especially at the Waldorf tournament. Lee registered 68 points, 69 rebounds and 15 points over the three games Old Mill played. She was exceptional in the championship, scoring 29 points and hauling in 23 rebounds.
To consider Old Mill a one player team would be a massive error though. Smith considers this team to be a very deep one, citing players such as Lee, Kaneshia Afi, Alayshia Dailey, Brandi Hall, Briana Ward and Ny'Zhea Green as standout players who can do damage. The team's overall depth has allowed the entire team to remain fresh, as most girls on the roster have been able to get significant playing time.
Looking ahead, Old Mill has a schedule filled with difficult opponents. The Patriots are excited to face Anne Arundel County rivals Arundel, Severna Park, South River, Meade and Annapolis in league play, as well as IAAM powerhouse Roland Park Country School in the Public vs. Private School Challenge. All of the difficult regular season games should be excellent prep as the Patriots look towards the postseason.
"Our goals this year are to win county's, regions and the state championship," Smith said.
